Shorthorn Heifer Champion "Queen of Hearts"

The Queen of Hearts Calf Show and Sale was a feature of the 2011 Beef Expo.  Held on Monday afternoon it attracted a great deal of interest and anticipation.  The judge, Liz Manchee from Australia, placed the Shorthorn calf Browns Primo Princess, exhibited by HS & JR Brown, first place, thereby having the honour of opening the sale.

After spirited bidding Browns Primo Princess was sold to Alan & Val Park of Corsock Shorthorns in Taumarunui for $4,000.  Two other Shorthorn calves from Brigadoon and Hiwiroa Studs sold for $3,000 each.

Beef Expo was a proud occasion for the Brown family with their bull Browns Piako Theo being awarded Champion Shorthorn Bull, so making it the "double".

2011 Beef Expo Results

Like many of the other sales the Shorthorn Beef Expo sale was a little subdued, with buyers slow to respond to the auctioneers exhortations.

Twelve of the 17 bulls sold for an average of $4167, grossing $50,000 for the breeders. The top price was $6,200, paid by K & K Waldron for Morton Shorthorn’s Orena Goldship 09002.

The champion Shorthorn bull of the Expo was Browns Piako Theo, bred by the Brown family of Morrinsville, purchased by P & L Barnett for $3,200.
